Meanings and Thoughts

Our class just Finished a movie called "Helvetica" and it was about what helvetica (the font type) does and how much of a impact it has on our world. Our post this week is what we think (at least 2) quotes mean.

Wim Crouwel
“You’re always a child of your time … you can’t escape it"

I think this means threw everyones life time theres always a generation you have grown up with. I think he means the people of this generation all have similar ideas based on what the know and learn from eachother. For example after WW2 alot of people of that generation were sick of the caotic, crazy and messy font so everyone wanted somthing readable, calm and most important, nutral. Thats why most people of that age (and even now) made and used helvetica beacuse of its nutral perfection.

Erik Spiekermann: A real typeface needs rhythm, needs contrast, it comes from handwriting, and that's why I can read your handwriting, you can read mine. And I'm sure our handwriting is miles away from Helvetica or anything that would be considered legible, but we can read it, because there's a rhythm to it, there's a contrast to it. Helvetica hasn't got *any* of that.

I think he has a huge point and great taste! I think what he means is helvetica is not human. Its "perfect". In our world no two people look exactly the same. He's saying helvetica is like a robot and everything in the font is straight and has no feeling to it. I think he wants difrences, being able to walk down the street and seeing a bunch of diffrent fonts instead of a entire street with almost every stores writing in helvetica. making loopy, ziggy, curvy and diffrent lines is what gives us our colours. We use diffrent clothing and colours to express our feelings, to show eachother our personalities, what makes us human.

Flying high with......birds

This Made me laugh, a combined picture of our last sketching assignment and our upcoming one!

Ok so our new unit in visual arts is........BIRDS!!!! Yes birds. They fly, they sing and their being printed on paper with our new unit. This unit involves Lino art(printmaking). This was a popular method of art for Picasso. I think this will be a difficult one to do because it confusing to me and im not great at drawing birds let alone carving them. I enjoy learning these new methods as long as i get a bit of help along the way. I was going to choose a bird with long legs or a type of head dress. The colours i'm going to choose are green and red on blue or yellow paper. I have only done print making once before in eighth grade. We needed to creat a winter scene. This method was easy because we only used one type of ink instead of two. I am up to the chalange and hope i will understand it better in the upcomming days.

Bounce, Bounce, Bounce

Tips and Tricks

This my first weekly blog post. Since we are currently creating flash in our class i decided to show a tutorial about how to make a bouncing ball. This is supposed to be the easy part of flash, its my first time doing it so i find it very difficult. I was so suprized seeing most of my other classmate already knew how to do it. Only about three or four kids including me diden't know about it. Well at first i was excited to do flash now, im just upset at how complicated it is. I was really looking forward to making somthing amazing. It won't get too far with only about a week to do it. I would buy the program but if i did i wouldent have any help at home so it woulden't work. I try my best and always ask for help but i try not to notice that almost every minute i need it.....hehe. So heres a a small video on how to do a tween! Hopfully, if you start or already do flash this can help. enjoy.
